Hardwood Floors Upstairs: Part 10 (Reveal!)

During the last 5 weeks, our family has lived in a construction zone while Tal single-handedly laid 1,000 square feet of hardwood floors in the upstairs of our house (Savannah's bedroom, Hadley's bedroom, bonus room, and guest bedroom). All of the dust and chaos has been worth it because we now have hardwood floors in every room in our house (except the tiled bathrooms and laundry room)!

At the beginning of 2016, Tal and I saved $4,000 for new carpet upstairs. However, after getting carpet quotes from a couple stores, we were disappointed to discover that we could only afford low-grade polyester carpet with our budget. Tal and I decided that we could increase our budget to $5,000 and get Stainmaster or higher quality nylon carpet OR we could lay hardwood floors (Classic Gunstock from Lumber Liquidators) ourselves for about the same price. Tal and I chose hardwoods, and we are thrilled with our decision!

Tal and I ended up spending $4,362 on flooring and supplies. We paid $3,812 for flooring and shoe molding plus $500 for tools and $50 for felt paper, nails, caulk, stain, and a threshold piece. We also spent $750 on area rugs and rug pads, so that brings our upstairs flooring project to a grand total of $5,112. Tal and I realize this is a lot of money, but we saved thousands of dollars by doing the demo, haul away, installation, and clean-up ourselves. After living with dirty, outdated flooring for over 5 years, our family is excited to (finally!) have durable, low-maintenance, and kid-friendly hardwood floors throughout our house!
